2025 MET GALA - SLAY OR NAY?

2025 MET GALA - SLAY OR NAY?

CALLING ALL FASHION LOVERS!

It’s our favourite time of year again! That’s right, the Met Gala looks are out and we can’t wait to judge them all with you! (Who cares if we’re sitting in our pajamas with unwashed hair? We’re totally qualified to comment on what’s hot and what’s definitely not!).

What is the Met Gala?

If you’re unfamiliar, the Met Gala is a charity event and fundraiser held every year for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Attendees to the event are highly exclusive, and can only show face if invited. Basically, no one’s getting in unless Anna Wintour herself says so! Celebs tend to get on the guest list by attending with a fashion brand, saving themselves tens of thousands of dollars.

It generally marks the opening of the department’s annual fashion exhibition, which is then open to the public a few days after the event itself. (I was lucky enough to be in New York back in 2019, and got to experience the ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ exhibition first hand. Probably a life highlight of mine tbh!).

Theme and Dress Code

Alright, so this is where things get interesting! Every year the Met Gala has a different theme and dress code that guests need to follow on the red carpet.

This year’s theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Drawing inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book ‘Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity', focusing on the importance of sartorial style to the formation of black identities. This is the first time in nearly two decades that the Met Gala has focused on menswear.

And the dress code? “Tailored for You,” nodding to menswear and suits. The “For You” aspect left much room for interpretation as we discovered, so let’s take a look at some of our favourite fits from the evening, and some of our not-so-favourites!
